*EDO 2024: TIME TO BUILD THE FOUNDATION FOR OUR FUTURE IN EDO STATE*

BUILD THE FOUNDATION

The time to build the industrial foundation for the future is now. The late Queen of England in defining statesmanship said “It has sometimes been observed that what leaders do for their people today is government and politics. But what they do for the people of tomorrow — that is statesmanship.” We must all come together to build for the people of tomorrow as statemen. In this building, meeting fundamental needs must be priority:

1.       Build gas pipeline from South to North of the state to provide domestic gas supply and most importantly provide gas supply for power turbines to be sited in strategic places in the 3 Senatorial Zones of the State.

2.       Build crude oil pipeline from South to North of the state to provide opportunities for mini and modularised refinery to produce basic crude oil products (diesel, petrol, kerosene, lubricating oil, etc.) for the state.

3.       Build Fibre Optic backbone from South to North of the state to provide for robust communication within the state.

4.       Begin to build and expand the network of roads that link us together again with lasting cement/concrete materials as was last left in the early 70s.

 

Once these foundation for growth is laid, then other infrastructural developments can follow. These include portable water, food processing and storage, training on the use of machines for artisans, mechanised farming for both plants and animals, medical expansion, drugs development and storage, airline transportation, electric train transportation, building shopping complex and modernized markets, tourism, etc.

 

COST OF NOT BUILDING

The negative impact of not building is with us. There are factors that have indicated this failure: increase in crimes and cult activities, widespread drugs and alcohol usage, notorious identifications of prostitution abroad, emergence of fake churches, upsurge in yahoo/419 boys activities, abandoned bad road, lack of portable water for all, epileptic electric power supply, poor medical services, unregulated educational system, security issues, etc. A lot of our youths have taken the risk of crossing the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea in the quest to emigrate to Europe for greener pastures. Some tragically have lost their lives. We have encountered loss of lives at home due to expired and gone off drugs because of lack of proper storage at the right temperature. The term “original” or “fake’ has become daily usage within us. Our farm produce, where the farmers managed to defile the “Security” threats and went to farm, have gone wasted as in previous years because of lack of storage and processing. This cost of lack of foundation is borne by all: rich or poor, organizations or individuals. I believe it is time for a rethink and reconsideration by all.

 

THE SEARCH OF THE POLITICAL PARTY

On one hand, most of the less prominent parties in the state are engrossed with infighting, distracting them from building parties to become formidable. They lack the funding, structure and spread of the two most power parties. Hence it is almost impossible for them to put up a strong resistance. On the other hand, the two prominent parties need a passionate executive personality that can drive this building of fundamental industrial foundation.

 

CONCLUSION

I believe all men of goodwill and all clean hands must come on deck to build our state. Our generation must take up its responsibility. We are the people. We must build for the future of the State. I wish I could express my deepest heart desire more clearly.
